Tips to Keeping Your Home Safe When You’re on Vacation

Summer is here, and for many Houston families, that means vacation time. Unfortunately, that also means opportunistic burglars are ready to take advantage of empty, unguarded homes. If you’re planning a vacation this summer, safeguarding your home is just as important as packing your bags.

According to Lieutenant Tom Libby of the Oak Ridge North Police Department, the key to keeping thieves at bay is giving the impression that your home is still occupied while you’re away. He recommends keeping the house’s outward appearance well-maintained and suggests having a neighbor or relative pick up your mail or mow your lawn.

You may have seen light switch timers at your local hardware store. These timers connect to the lamps and lights in your home, and can be programmed to turn off and on at certain hours of the day. Illuminated lights near windows can give the illusion that you are home at night to passersby.

Here are some other great tips:

  • Have a neighbor, relative, or friend to monitor your home – a malfunctioning sprinkler could be a sign no one is home if it isn’t promptly taken care of.
  • Stop your mail or have a neighbor pick it up for you.
  • Lock your home and don’t leave spare keys under obvious places like under rocks or pots.
  • Be smart with social media – posting photos of your vacation or checking into distant locales alerts your network to your absence.
  • Have a neighbor or relative handle your trash – nothing says no one’s home more than an untended trash can at the end of the driveway.

In addition to what you can address yourself, inquire about security patrols in your neighborhood. The consistent presence of a security patrol vehicle acts as a deterrent for thieves, and the well-trained security officer operating the car will know exactly what to do if a burglary seems imminent.
